Buying EN590 diesel across borders is straightforward once you know the sequence. The difficulty is rarely the logistics — it is verifying the counterparty and structuring the deal so both sides are protected. This step-by-step guide walks through a compliant EN590 purchase.
Step 1 — Define your requirement
Before contacting anyone, fix your parameters: grade (EN590 10ppm ULSD), volume, contract length (spot or term), destination port, and Incoterm. If you are unsure whether you need CIF or FOB, read CIF vs FOB for fuel buyers.
Step 2 — Send an LOI or ICPO
Approach the supplier with a Letter of Intent or an Irrevocable Corporate Purchase Order stating those parameters. A professional counterparty responds with a Soft Corporate Offer (SCO). Learn the paperwork in ICPO and SCO explained.
Step 3 — Complete KYC on both sides
Expect to be screened, and screen the supplier in return: corporate registration, ownership, sanctions checks. Mutual KYC/AML is a sign of a serious deal, not an obstacle.
Step 4 — Agree the contract (SPA)
The Sales & Purchase Agreement sets price, specification, inspection, payment instrument and delivery schedule. This is where CIF or FOB and the exact procedure are locked. See our trading procedures for both variants.
Step 5 — Inspection and delivery
Independent SGS/Intertek inspection confirms quantity and quality; product is delivered and documents released per the Incoterm. Payment follows the agreed instrument.
What to avoid
Refuse upfront "verification" or "allocation" fees, be sceptical of below-market prices, and never treat MT199/MT799 as proof. The full warning list is in oil trading scam red flags. When you are ready to transact, our EN590 product page and contact page are the place to start.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an EN590 deal take to set up?
A clean transaction can move from enquiry to contract within days once KYC and terms are agreed. Delays usually signal an unclear counterparty rather than a complex product.
Do I need my own shipping?
Only for FOB. Choose CIF and the seller arranges freight and insurance to your port. LinkPort quotes both.
